Volcanic rock island

Åstol is a very striking sight, whether you’ve climbed up to a viewpoint on Tjörn and looked out over the sea toward the horizon or you’ve travelled to the island via Marstrandsfjord. The unique rocky island looks as if it has been thrust out of Västerhavet, complete with a mass of white wooden houses which appear to cover almost the entire island.

Its bedrock consists of smoothly eroded amphibolite, a volcanic rock type, on which plants have managed to grow in small valleys despite the harsh conditions here. The light from the surrounding sea gives the whole island a very special atmosphere. Over the years, the capricious weather has governed conditions for the inhabitants on Åstol, who have defied the forces of nature and given life to the island.

Narrow streets and invigorating dips

A sense of calm is the first impression you have as you step off the ferry in the deep horse-shoe harbour. The narrow, car-free streets meander between the houses and in the middle of the island there is a lush little park with a memorial to lost fishermen. Klockareudden has a natural rock pool filled with salt-water, a water slide and a sandy bottom

ECCO LA COSTA DELLA SVEZIA OCCIDENTALE

Il Viaggiatore Magazine &#; Bohuslän, Svezia

In viaggio facendo &#;Island hopping&#;

If you visit Gothenburg and want to make a day trip to Bohuslän, we recommend the island of Åstol. Åstol is a small and picturesque skerry island and very typical for Bohuslän. It is situated between the island of Marstrand in the south and the island of Tjörn in the north.

On Åstol you will find a busy natural harbour, a well-known restaurant with smokery, bar and shop, a café, and a sheltered and child-friendly bathing place. About inhabitants live on the island permanently. Fifty, sixty years ago, in the heyday of fishing, there were almost twice as many.

Passenger ferry from Rönnäng

Åstol is car-free. You get to the island with a ferry from Rönnäng on the southwestern tip of Tjörn. The ferry takes 20 minutes to Åstol.

If you are coming by car from Gothenburg, it takes about 50 minutes to Rönnäng. Parking in Rönnäng is somewhat difficult, which is quite common on the Bohuslän coast. However, at the entrance of the village you will find a large parking lot from where you need to walk to the harbour for about 20 minutes. There is also a direct bus to Rönnang from the Nils Ericson bus terminal at Gothenburg Central Station.

What to see and do on Tjörn? This scenic island on the west coast of Bohuslän offers a wonderful holiday idyll. Here you will find tips on sights, experiences and activities.

Tjörn in Bohuslän

To visit Tjörn, Sweden's seventh largest island, is to move right into the holiday spirit. Nature is barren yet beautiful, and the main island of Tjörn is surrounded by a large number of smaller islands, islets and skerries. In summer, the island attracts many tourists who want to enjoy the west coast idyll.

Tjörn is located on the west coast of Bohuslän, just south of Orust and just north of Marstrand. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge to Stenungsund, and there is also a bridge connection to Orust.

Getting to Tjörn

You can easily get to Tjörn by car, either via Stenungsund or via Orust. The night before, we spent the night in our motorhome at the car park at Hamnplan Stenkajen in Stenungsund. Here we thought we were relatively nice, with electricity and other services.

However, we were annoyed when we realised that the toilets, which were included in the price, were unreasonably far away. It was also difficult to find them, and after we finally found them, we h
